I'm a garden writer and publish a weekly column in a local paper. Why should I refrain from using peat? I spoke with a Canadian producer a couple of years ago and it appeared to me that using peat was not a bad thing. Now, it seems like every time I turn around, someone is saying how bad it is for the environment. I have a basic understanding of how peat is harvested, perhaps I need enlightened about how it's a detriment to the average gardener. (I am a Penn State Certified Master Gardener.)
